Vision
A protected and thriving Bonita Estero Rail Trail greenway that preserves Southwest Florida’s natural landscapes, connects communities and the Florida Gulf Coast Trail system, and provides safe, accessible outdoor recreation for generations to come.
Mission
The mission of Friends of the Bonita Estero Rail Trail is to protect and advance the BERT greenway as a conserved natural corridor with a connected multi-use trail that enhances environmental stewardship, safe recreation, and access to Southwest Florida’s natural resources. We build community support, secure funding, and partner with public and private leaders to ensure the long-term preservation, safety, and sustainable use of this vital greenway for residents and visitors, and future generations.
Core Values
Friends of BERT advances four core pillars—Safety, Health, Environmental Stewardship, and Economic Vitality—to ensure the Bonita Estero Rail Trail greenway delivers lasting benefits to our community and region.
Safety
We prioritize the safety of all users by advocating for a protected greenway and trail that separates bicyclists and pedestrians from vehicle traffic. By providing safe crossings, trailheads, lighting, and education, the BERT greenway reduces reliance on busy roadways and creates a secure environment for walking, biking, and recreation for people of all ages and abilities.
Health
We believe the BERT greenway and trail promote healthier communities by providing opportunities for active transportation, outdoor recreation, and improved physical and mental well-being for residents and visitors.
Environmental Stewardship
We are committed to preserving the BERT corridor as a protected greenway and conservation corridor that safeguards natural habitats, enhances environmental awareness, and supports responsible stewardship of Southwest Florida’s natural resources.
Economic Vitality
We support sustainable, trail-oriented economic development that strengthens local businesses, enhances tourism, and contributes positively to the regional economy while respecting the natural character of the greenway.
