Community Momentum Builds Behind Bonita Estero Rail Trail

Over $100,000 in Gifts and Pledges Announced at Community Celebration. Energy, optimism, and unity were on full display in early June as dozens of community members gathered for an Evening of Connection and Community hosted by the board of Friends of the Bonita Estero Rail Trail (BERT). Hosted by the generous folks at FineMark National Bank and Trust in Bonita Springs, the event brought together trail supporters, civic leaders, and advocates for a healthier, more connected Southwest Florida.

“Strong communities are built through strong relationships, and that’s exactly what we saw tonight,” said Steve Gunther, Friends of BERT board member and one of the trail’s leading advocates. “BERT is more than a trail—it’s a connector of people, places, and possibilities. Once built, it will serve generations.”

Gunther used the occasion to announce an ambitious capital campaign aimed at accelerating land acquisition and early construction. With nearly $33 million already pledged by local governments, the public support announced at the event adds critical momentum—and proves that everyday residents can play a central role in shaping the region’s future.

The highlight of the evening? A major boost to the trail’s capital campaign. $100,000 in new commitments were announced to fuel the next phase of progress—including a $50,000 seed gift from Friends of BERT, matched by $50,000 in pledges from five generous local donors.

The June 5 gathering wasn’t just a fundraiser—it was a reminder that BERT is a community-powered initiative. Attendees shared stories, explored trail renderings, and discussed the legacy they hope to leave for future generations.

As organizers emphasized during the evening, this is just the beginning. The BERT Capital campaign now turns to the broader community to keep the momentum going.

Together, we can turn a forgotten rail corridor into a powerful symbol of progress, connection, and shared purpose. Let’s build the trail—and the future—together.
